A Clinical Study of the Hemiarthroplasty in Acute Intertrochanteric Fracture of the Femur

Abstract
Intertrochanteric fractures frequently occur in elderly patients and its incidence has been increased recently. There are many complications in elderly patients, those are skin ulceration, pneumonia, urinary stasis, thromboembolic disease ard other complications of confinement to bed in elderly patient. Primary goal in treatment of inter trochanteric fracture in elderly patient is to return the patient to their preoperative activity as soon as possible. For these reasons, interochanteric fracture of the femur has been treated with surgical method. The authors have treated 8 cases of intertrochanteric fractures of the femur in elderly patients with Moore or Thompson Hemiarthroplasty from June, 1982 to February, 1984. The following results were obtained.
1. Of 8 cases, 2 cases were male and 6 cases were female. Each mean age was 65 years old in male, 71 years eld in female.
2. Most common cause of fracture was slip-down and next fall-down.
3. According to Tronzo classification, type 3 was most common(75 % ).
4. Mean interval between injury and operation was 10 days.
4. Mean interval between injury and operation was 10 days.
5. All patinets were treated with Moore(1 case) or Thompson(7 cases) hemiarthroplasty.
6. Radiological immediate postoperative result were excellent (75%), gocd(25 %).
7. Osteoporosis was more severe than patient with femoral neck fracture.
8. From these results, hemiarthroplasty in the teatment of intertrochanteric fracture were thought to be uscful methcd in elderly patient for early mobilization and less complication.
